Consultant's supply Chain: Unveiling ethical responsibilities

Behind every service provider is a long production chain, and it's easy to forget that when what's being delivered is the skills and expertise of highly trained employees, not physical products.
Office meeting

A day at the office
Our employee arrives at the office in the morning. He turns on his work PC. It has been purchased from a reputable supplier, but is manufactured in Southeast Asia and defined as high-risk. He checks his phone, which contains metals that are extracted from African mines under extremely dubious conditions.

He takes a cup of coffee from the coffee machine. A good cup of coffee gets the day off to a good start. We know that unsafe working conditions, low wages and child labor occur in coffee production in many parts of the world. He takes a sip of his coffee and remembers that he's going to an external customer meeting.

He calls the reception and gets them to book a taxi for him through the company's taxi agreement. Does the company know whether the taxi drivers have proper working conditions and receive the wages they are entitled to? On his way down the stairs, he meets the cheerful and friendly cleaner who comes to clean the offices at regular intervals. Surely the cleaner has good pay and working conditions? After a successful meeting, he returns to the office, sits down in his office chair and plans the rest of the working day.

Supply chains are complex
Just a couple of hours with our consultant shows how complex supply chains can be. And we haven't even touched on furniture, office supplies or workwear, let alone shipping services. Even if service providers do not deliver physical products themselves, many products and services are purchased where the risk of fundamental human rights violations in the supply chain can be high.
